The 25-Year Taxonomic Shift: Where Did My Cichlids Go?

If you kept, bred, or traded African cichlids a quarter of a century ago, walking into a modern aquarium room can feel completely disorientating. You scan the tank labels looking for old favorites, only to find names that sound entirely foreign. It feels as though an entire catalog of beloved species has vanished overnight.

But here is the reassuring reality: the fish we loved haven't disappeared at all. They are still exactly the same stunning, pugnacious, and endlessly fascinating creatures they were 25 years ago. Science hasn’t deleted them; it has simply rewritten their family tree to match the truth.

From Magnifying Glasses to DNA Sequencing

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, ichthyology relied almost entirely on morphology—what a fish looked like on the outside. If an Mbuna from Lake Malawi was blue and had vertical zebra bars, it was casually thrown into a massive "wastebasket genus" like Pseudotropheus. If a Victorian cichlid was a mouthbrooder, it was dumped into a single giant folder labeled Haplochromis.

Over the last 25 years, a massive wave of high-throughput genomic sequencing and molecular DNA mapping changed everything. When scientists finally peered into the actual genetic blueprints of these fish, they discovered that species we assumed were brothers were actually distant cousins. They had merely adapted to the rocky reefs in similar ways—a biological phenomenon known as convergent evolution.

The Great Mbuna Reshuffle

If your fish room in 2001 was anything like mine, half your tanks were labeled Pseudotropheus. Today, that genus has been strictly trimmed to house only a tiny handful of generalized rock-dwellers. The rest have graduated into specialized modern genera:

  • The "Zebra" Complex became Maylandia: The absolute cornerstone of the old hobby, Pseudotropheus zebra, is now officially Maylandia zebra. They were given their own genus to recognize their highly specific, broad, square-set jaws engineered exclusively for scraping algae completely flat off rock faces. (Note: You will also see Metriaclima used for this group due to an ongoing scientific naming dispute, but Maylandia holds senior taxonomic priority).
  • The "Elongatus" Complex became Chindongo: If you bred the slender, hyper-aggressive Pseudotropheus elongatus variants, they moved in 2016 to the brand-new genus Chindongo. DNA tracking proved these torpedo-shaped Mbuna are genetically distinct, possessing unique tooth structures closer to Melanochromis.
  • The "Tropheops" Complex became Tropheops: Your old Pseudotropheus tropheops variants are now officially recognized under their own full valid genus, Tropheops, highlighting their vertical algae-shearing mechanics and steep, down-sloped snouts.

Unbundling the Other Lakes

The taxonomic cleanup expanded right across the Great Rift Valley. In Lake Victoria, the massive Haplochromis genus was aggressively unbundled. The rock-dwelling zebras you knew are now Pundamilia, the aggressive algae-choppers are Mbipia, and the open-water pelagic hunters are Harpagochromis.

Meanwhile, in Lake Tanganyika, the opposite happened. Geneticists realized that keeping highly similar deep sand plains species under separate, confusing labels was redundant. As a result, older historic genera like Enantiopus and Asprotilapia were smoothly consolidated under a single, unified "Sand-Sifter Dynasty" known as Xenotilapia.
