Over the last 25 years, genetic mapping and molecular research have radically changed how these species are categorized.

The Haplochromis "Sensu Lato" Debate: The classification of Victorian cichlids remains an active area of ichthyological research. While many distinct aquarium groupings established by Peter Humphry Greenwood—such as Pundamilia, Lithochromis, and Xystichromis—are heavily utilized in the hobby, global taxonomic databases often consolidate them as subgenera under a broader definition of Haplochromis. We list them distinctly here to preserve clarity for hobbyists.
Riverine Filtering: Outdated 20th-century listings including true Tilapia have been resolved in favor of Oreochromis.
