The genus Oreochromis comprises a lineage of highly robust, deep-bodied, and globally significant tilapiine cichlids spread throughout African waterways. Within the Lake Victoria basin, these ancestral giants predate the younger haplochromine flocks. Historically forming the literal commercial backbone of the lake's open waters, they fill a massive ecological role as macro-plankton filterers and major detritivores.

Phytoplankton Filtration & The 25-Year Conservation Crisis

The name Oreochromis translates from Greek and Latin to mean a "mountain chromis (cichlid)," a nod to the rugged inland river basins they natively conquer. Unlike the compact, rock-bound rock-dwellers, they feature highly elongated, heavy-set profiles built for open water endurance. They are highly specialized phytoplanktonivores and detritivores.

They possess wide, muscular mouths lined with an incredibly dense array of fine, flexible, brush-like outer teeth. In their natural wild habitat, they cruise through the pelagic zones and muddy bays, gulping massive quantities of water. Using micro-gill rakers, they cleanly filter out drifting single-celled algae, green plankton clouds, and organic lake ooze, safely digesting complex plant materials that would choke standard cichlids.

Because they achieve significant physical mass and are high-speed open water swimmers, they strictly demand enormous aquariums measuring at least 6 feet in length (150 to 180 gallons minimum). Provide an expansive layout focusing entirely on massive open horizontal swimming channels across the center, backed by a soft, fine sand substrate. Plants should be avoided as they will easily graze them down.

They are highly advanced **maternal mouthbrooders** that spawn directly over sand-bed depressions, with females carrying massive clutches for up to 4 weeks. They are remarkably peaceful, docile, and social giants that completely lack territorial malice toward non-competing tankmates, though mature breeding males will fiercely chase rivals out of their sand bower circles. Because they are robust herbivores and filter-feeders, they easily accept high-fiber commercial spirulina flakes, veggie pellets, and freeze-dried plankton mixes in captivity, requiring oversized biological filtration networks to handle their waste outputs.
