The genus Enterochromis represents an exceptionally specialized, physiologically extreme branch of rock-dwelling and sediment-grazing cichlids endemic to the Lake Victoria basin. Deeply embedded within the herbivorous complex of the lake, these small, high-energy fish are highly studied by evolutionary biologists for their unique cranial geometries and one of the longest digestive systems relative to body mass found in the Rift Valley.

The name Enterochromis translates directly from Greek to imply an "intestine or gut cichlid," a nod to their extreme internal anatomy. On older 25-year-old site taxonomies, these specialized vegetarians were completely buried inside the massive Haplochromis catch-all genus. Modern molecular DNA sequencing and internal anatomical mapping successfully validated their status, isolating them into an independent valid lineage based on their unique jaw mechanics and gut architecture.

In their natural wild biotope, they are obligate **epilithic herbivores** and detritivores. They feature highly compact, high-backed vertical profiles paired with small, steeply sloping heads and narrow mouth frames. They target the loose, floating layer of micro-diatoms, single-celled algae, and cyanobacteria blanketed across sunlit rocky reefs.

To extract nutrition from this low-calorie food source, they possess highly flexible jaws lined with rows of fine, closely packed tricuspid outer teeth. They open their mouths wide to cleanly brush and comb organic matter off the stones without swallowing heavy sand grains. To digest this fiber-heavy raw material safely, their intestinal tracts have evolved to be hyper-coiled, extending up to several times the actual physical length of the fish.

Aquarium Husbandry & Diet Precautions

Adult lengths typically range from a compact 3.5 to 4.2 inches (9–11 cm). They can be successfully maintained in aquariums measuring at least 4 feet in length (55 to 75 gallons minimum). To properly mirror their native shallow biotope, provide an abundance of heavy rockwork built into tall, complex matrices along the background to break sightlines, but maintain a fine sandy base.

They are highly advanced **maternal mouthbrooders** that carry eggs inside their oral cavities for up to 3 weeks. While completely peaceful toward non-competing tankmates, mature males display high territorial aggression toward their own kind. They should ideally be kept in a harem setting (one male to multiple females) to safely distribute breeding pressure.

Because their digestive systems are intricately long to process high-fiber roughage, their captive diet is critical and non-negotiable. They must be fed a strictly herbivorous diet high in premium spirulina flakes and vegetable matter. High-protein, mammalian fats, or heavy live bloodworms will instantly cause severe digestive blockages, triggering a rapid, fatal swelling epidemic known as "Victorian Bloat."
