They are classic generalist omnivores and opportunistic insectivores. They possess straight, evenly muscled mouth frames lined with rows of standard bicuspid outer teeth. In the wild, they lack a locked-in specialized diet; an active shoal moves smoothly between picking aquatic midge larvae out of mud flats, grazing loose diatoms off reeds, and snapping up drifting micro-crustaceans.
Biologically, they are world-famous for their highly advanced maternal mouthbrooding strategies. Dominant males develop intensely bright, circular **"egg-spots" (ocelli)** trimmed in a deep black halo on their anal fins. During spawning, these spots act as a precise visual optical trap, tricking the female into attempting to scoop up the "floating eggs" into her mouth.
