Family: Cichlidae
Tribe: Lamprologini
Group: Rock-Dwelling Cave Spawners
Origin: Southern Basin Rock Faces

Genus Overview: Variabilichromis (The Shift-Color Cichlids)

The genus Variabilichromis represents a remarkably distinct, highly isolated, and specialized monotypic lineage within the Lake Tanganyika cichlid complex. Unlike the sprawling generic groups that share its evolutionary branch, this genus contains only one single species. Variabilichromis belongs to the incredibly diverse tribe Lamprologini, yet stands entirely apart due to its unique genetic history, specialized parental behaviours, and a physical transformation that is practically unmatched among its closest structural relatives.

The Morphological Metamorphosis

The name Variabilichromis translates directly to imply a "variable or changing cichlid," a taxonomic nod to the dramatic physical metamorphosis these fish undergo from youth to adulthood. They are specialized **rock dwellers and aufwuchs grazers** that completely overhaul their appearance as they carve out territories along the lake floor.

As juveniles, these fish flash a vivid, eye-catching palette of bright, honey-yellow or warm orange-beige, allowing them to blend subtly into the sunlit, algae-filmed upper shelves of the lake. However, upon reaching maturity at a modest size of roughly 4.1 inches (10.3 cm), they undergo a total cosmetic inversion.

Mature adults develop a rich, deep velvet-brown to solid jet-black body color. To contrast this midnight-dark profile, they develop brilliant, electric-blue or stark white iridescent margins that cleanly trace the outer borders of their dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. This striking contrast serves as a clear visual signal to rivals in the dim, rocky labyrinths.

The Principal Tanganyikan Representative

While other tribes spread broadly across many rivers, the Lamprologini are heavily anchored in the Rift Valley, with this specific genus holding exactly one highly localized endemic species:

  • Variabilichromis moorii (Boulenger, 1898)The Variable Moorii Cichlid. Endemic to the rocky littoral shorelines of the southern basin, stretching across Zambia and Tanzania. Adults maintain fierce territorial boundaries over shallow vertical stone faces, picking at micro-invertebrates and filamentous algae.

Aquarium Husbandry & Complex Brood Care

Because adult specimens of Variabilichromis moorii maintain a compact, manageable size of 4 inches, they are well-suited for medium-scale home displays. However, due to their intense, high-energy territorial defense systems, a single bonded pair should be provided a dedicated tank of at least 30 gallons (115 litres), or a much larger setup if integrated into a mixed Tanganyikan community.

To safely accommodate their secretive nesting habits, an abundance of heavy rockwork, vertical stone slabs, and deep, dark caves is an absolute prerequisite; these structures allow the fish to establish distinct physical boundaries. They are highly advanced **substrate and cave spawners** that form fiercely monogamous, life-long pairs, with both parents aggressively defending up to 100 eggs attached to cave walls.

They are highly territorial toward their own kind and similarly shaped dark cichlids, but can be safely housed alongside open-water swimmers like *Cyprichromis* or heavily armoured rock-dwellers like *Altolamprologus*. In captivity, they demand stable, highly alkaline water (pH 7.8–9.0), strong filtration, and easily accept a varied diet of premium spirulina flakes, high-quality pellets, and frozen mysis shrimp.
