The genus Neolamprologus stands as the single most diverse, ecologically successful, and species-rich lineage within Lake Tanganyika. Serving as the monumental taxonomic anchor for the ancient Lamprologini tribe, these predatory, rock-associated cichlids populate every tier of the lake's rugged coastlines. From towering boulder reefs to sweeping, barren fields of empty snail shells, their advanced social instincts have made them global mainstays of the fishkeeping world.

The 25-Year Split & Precision Crevice Carnivory

The name Neolamprologus translates from Greek to mean "new bright or shining scaled cichlid." Over the last 25 years, this genus has sat at the center of intense DNA sequencing and phylogenetic revision. While it historically acted as a massive "catch-all" genus, molecular studies have successfully spun off distinct specialized branches (such as the revalidation of Altolamprologus and certain Lepidiolamprologus lines). Despite these cuts, it remains a colossal genus housing a staggering array of body masses.

Anatomically, they feature narrow, highly streamlined vertical profiles paired with deeply set, sharp canine teeth. In their natural wild biotope, they are specialized micro-predators, carnivores, and insectivores. They use their aerodynamic heads to glide into tight rocky fissures or slip between empty snail shells, snapping up target freshwater shrimp, insect larvae, and smaller cichlid fry with a sudden, localized forward vacuum lunge.

Aquarium Husbandry & Complex Social Colonies

Adult sizes range drastically based on the ecological group—running from a tiny 1.5 inches (4 cm) in dwarf shell-dwellers up to a robust 6 inches (15 cm) in large cave hunters like N. tetracanthus. Depending on the targeted species, they can be safely maintained in setups ranging from small 20-gallon "shell-beds" up to large 75-gallon community rock reefs.

Unlike the mouthbrooders of Lake Malawi, all Neolamprologus are strict substrate spawners that practice complex, monogamous or harem-based pair bonding. Rock-dwellers require networks of stacked slate and stone caves, while shell-dwellers demand a deep layer of fine, soft sand blanketed by dozens of empty escargot or Neothauma snail shells.

The "Brichardi complex" displays an extraordinary family structure known as cooperative step-rearing. A bonded alpha pair will spawn inside a deep cave, but instead of chasing away their older juvenile offspring, the parents permit them to stay inside the territory. These older siblings form a dedicated border guard, aggressively defending the cave perimeter and actively cleaning and rearing the newest batches of tiny fry. In captivity, they are highly robust and eagerly accept cichlid pellets, flakes, frozen mysis, and daphnia.
