In their natural wild habitat, they are specialized micro-predators, carnivores, and insectivores. They use their hydrodynamic profiles to hover tightly above loose sediment or rocky lines, launching sudden forward vacuum lunges to snap up drifting zooplankton, insect larvae, and small micro-crustaceans.

Due to their compact vertical dimensions, many dwarf shell-dwellers are highly attractive candidates for nano-aquariums ranging from 15 to 30 gallons.
To satisfy their highly complex wild instincts, a deep layer (2–3 inches) of exceptionally fine, soft, smooth sand substrate is an absolute, non-negotiable prerequisite; rough or sharp gravel will permanently scratch their delicate mouth linings and completely prevent their natural architectural engineering.
They must be provided with an abundance of empty Neothauma or escargot snail shells. Species like Lamprologus ocellatus exhibit incredible behaviour: they will shove their snouts under a shell, blast away sand with their tails, and bury the shell completely until only the open rim is visible flush with the sand plain.
They are strict **substrate cave spawners** that lay adhesive eggs deep inside the shell. They are incredibly fierce, bold, and territorial pocket giants that will actively attack an aquarist's hand or siphon tube to defend their shell nurseries. In captivity, they eagerly accept high-quality commercial flakes, premium micro-pellets, frozen mysis, and daphnia.
