The genus Grammatotria represents a highly distinct, robust, and evolutionarily fascinating branch of sand-dwelling cichlids endemic to Lake Tanganyika. It is a monotypic genus containing only a single, highly specialized valid species: Grammatotria lemairii. Operating across the wide, open sandy plains and deep sedimented shelves, this impressive schooling fish is deeply revered by advanced biotope enthusiasts for its majestic size and complex substrate-filtering behaviours.

Linear Camouflage & Deep Sand-Ploughing Mechanics

The name Grammatotria is a descriptive hybrid derived from the Greek words gramma (line or letter) and tria (three), directly calling out the three subtle horizontal rows of dark spots or lines running along their silver flanks. They feature an exceptionally elongated, powerful profile driven by a steeply sloping snout and massive eyes positioned high on their skulls to scan for open-water predators.

In their natural wild habitat, they are specialized micro-predators and benthic molluscivores. While dwarf sand-sifters stay confined to shallow shores, Grammatotria lemairii forms large, powerful, and nomadic foraging schools that cruise deep sandy flats and muddy boundaries.

The fish exhibits a high-energy digging behaviour, thrusting its long snout vertically straight down into the loose sediment to gather massive mouthfuls of substrate. Using its highly developed, closely spaced gill rakers like an internal sieve, it strains out hidden midge larvae, small lake snails, and deep-water crustaceans, cleanly venting the filtered waste sand out through its gill covers while swallowing the trapped prey whole.

Females and sub-dominant juveniles carry a highly reflective, flawless silvery-white iridescent base camouflage to mirror sunlit sand ripples and blend seamlessly against shifting surface light currents. When a dominant male prepares to breed, he undergoes a beautiful, subtle transformation—developing a warm yellow-gold to copper glow along his lower ventral flank, highlighted by shimmering neon-blue and violet iridescent flecks across his high-crested dorsal and expansive tail fin curtains.

Aquarium Husbandry & Maternal Mouthbrooding

Adult males slowly achieve a commanding length of roughly 8 to 10 inches (20–25 cm)—making them significantly larger than standard Xenotilapia—strictly demanding spacious aquariums measuring at least 5 to 6 feet in length (125 to 150 gallons minimum). To safely satisfy their heavy sand-ploughing behaviours and protect their mouthparts, a deep, clean layer of very fine, smooth, soft sand substrate is an absolute, non-negotiable prerequisite; rough gravel will permanently scratch their delicate lip linings and choke their sensitive gill sifting structures.

They are advanced **maternal mouthbrooders** that spawn right over the open sand plain, with females carrying the large eggs inside their oral cavities for up to 4 weeks. They are remarkably peaceful, social, and non-aggressive giants toward other non-benthic species. However, they must never be housed alongside rowdy rock Mbuna or dominant *Tropheus*, which will easily bully them. In captivity, they eagerly accept premium commercial pellets, flakes, frozen krill, and mysis shrimp.
