Genus Overview: Eretmodus (Goby Cichlids)

The genus Eretmodus represents an absolute masterpiece of extreme evolutionary adaptation within Lake Tanganyika. Grouped into their own unique, specialized tribe (Eretmodini), these fascinating "Goby Cichlids" are physically engineered to colonize the absolute shallowest, most turbulent, and wave-smashed upper rocky shorelines—a highly oxygenated zone known to biologists as the surf or surge zone.

Swim Bladder Reduction & Chisel Scraping

The name Eretmodus translates from Greek to imply "oar-toothed," a direct taxonomic nod to their highly unique, spatula-shaped teeth. To survive in an environment where massive crashing waves would constantly smash standard floating fish against the stones, Eretmodus have evolved a radical physical solution: they have heavily **reduced and deflated their swim bladders**.

Lacking vertical buoyancy, these fish do not swim through open water columns. Instead, they sit directly on top of the rocks, hopping, skipping, and darting from boulder to boulder exactly like marine gobies or blennies. They utilize their thickened, heavily reinforced pectoral fins like biological landing struts to securely anchor themselves against violent crashing undertows.

They are highly specialized herbivores that feed on the short, dense mats of Aufwuchs (algal carpets) coating the sunlit rocks. They possess a severely downturned, horse-like mouth frame lined with rows of flexible, deeply rooted chisel teeth. The fish presses its snout flat against the stone, clipping away high-fiber algae filaments with immense leverage while maintaining its flat, aerodynamic profile against the rushing surf.

Valid Species Directory

Modern scientific records recognize two valid species within this prolific lineage, though numerous distinct geographic colour variants pop up across different coastlines:

  • Eretmodus cyanostictus Boulenger, 1898The classic Striped Goby Cichlid. The absolute cornerstone type species of the genus, famous for its deep brown-olive base decorated with rows of brilliant, glittering neon-blue dots lining its head and upper back flank.
  • Eretmodus paradoxus (Poll, 1986)Characterized by a slightly stouter head mass and an altered dental configuration.

Aquarium Husbandry & Bi-Parental Mouthbrooding

Adults achieve a highly manageable maximum length of roughly 3.5 to 4 inches (9–10 cm), making them highly attractive candidates for 40 to 55-gallon aquariums. To properly replicate their wild surge zone, provide an absolute abundance of large, flat rocks and smooth river stones stacked into low matrices, combined with a soft sandy base. High water movement via heavy-duty wavemakers and intense oxygenation via oversized air stones or surface agitation are absolute, non-negotiable prerequisites.

Reprodutively, they display a highly advanced, fascinating strategy known as **delayed bi-parental mouthbrooding**. A bonded pair will spawn on a flat rock surface. The female immediately scoops up the eggs and mouthbroods them inside her mouth for roughly 10 to 12 days. In a beautiful display of family teamwork, she then physically transfers the partially developed larvae directly over to the male cichlid, who carries them inside his own mouth for an additional 10 days until they are ready to be released as fully formed fry.

Because they are obligate vegetarians built to process high-fiber roughage, their captive diet requires extreme care. They must be fed a strictly herbivorous diet high in premium spirulina flakes and vegetable matter. High-protein or fatty foods will instantly destroy their elongated digestive tracts, triggering fatal intestinal blocks known as "Bloat."
