Quick Facts

Genus Type: Polytypic (3 valid species)
Family: Cichlidae
Subfamily: Pseudocrenilabrinae
Tribe: Lamprologini
Origin: Lake Tanganyika (Endemic)

Genus Overview: Chalinochromis (Bridled Cichlids)

The genus Chalinochromis comprises a small, visually striking, and structurally distinct group of rock-dwelling cichlids endemic to Lake Tanganyika. Deeply embedded within the prolific Lamprologini tribe, these sleek, elongated fish are highly admired by hobbyists for their complex social structures, unique facial markings, and precision substrate-grazing habits.

The Bridle Mask & Precision Rock Gleaning

The name Chalinochromis is an elegant descriptor derived from the Greek word chalinos (a bridle or bit), directly calling out the bold, dark mask-like lines that wrap cleanly around their heads, snouts, and gill covers. They feature a highly streamlined, cylinder-shaped body profile built for navigating tight underwater spaces.

In their natural wild habitat, they colonize the sediment-free upper rocky reefs and deep boulder fields. They are specialized omnivorous invertebrate pickers and gleaners. Instead of broadly scraping algae off boulders like *Tropheus*, a Chalinochromis utilizes its noticeably thickened, fleshy lips and forward-pointing, specialized teeth. The fish hovers close to the stone, using its lips as a seal to cleanly extract small freshwater sponges, insect larvae, and microscopic crustaceans tightly woven into the algae carpets.

Valid Species Directory

Modern ichthyological catalogs recognize three valid species within this lineage, though geographic variations with unique fin colours add immense variety to the hobby:

  • Chalinochromis brichardi Poll, 1974The absolute historical type species of the genus. Famous for its crisp, dark "bridled" bars wrapped around its cream-colored head and body.
  • Chalinochromis cyanophleps Kullander, Karlsson, Karlsson & Norén, 2014The Blue-Veined Chalinochromis, a spectacular addition defined by iridescent blue veins lining its lower eyes and cheeks.
  • Chalinochromis popeleni Poll, 1974Popelen's Cichlid, displaying slightly stouter vertical body dimensions and unique golden fin borders.

Aquarium Husbandry & Bi-Parental Caves

Adult lengths typically reach a manageable 4.5 to 5.5 inches (11–14 cm), making them ideal candidates for 40 to 55-gallon aquariums. To properly replicate their wild habitat, provide an abundance of stacked rockwork, slate tiles, and ceramic tubes built into dense matrices to form intricate cave networks.

Unlike the mouthbrooding cichlids of Lake Malawi, Chalinochromis are dedicated **bi-parental substrate spawners**. A bonded pair will choose a deeply hidden, secure rock cave to clean and defend against all intruders. The female secretes up to 100 adhesive eggs onto the cave roof or wall, which the male immediately fertilizes. Both parents remain inside, aggressively defending the nursery and sharing rearing duties. In captivity, they are highly rewarding to keep and eagerly accept premium spirulina flakes, high-quality omnivore pellets, frozen mysis, and brine shrimp.
