Benthochromis

Quick Facts

Genus Type: Polytypic (3 valid species)
Family: Cichlidae
Subfamily: Pseudocrenilabrinae
Tribe: Benthochromini (Pelagic)
Origin: Lake Tanganyika (Endemic)

Genus Overview: Benthochromis (Deep-Water Giants)

The genus Benthochromis represents an exceptionally majestic, evolutionarily distinct, and highly sought-after lineage of open-water cichlids endemic to Lake Tanganyika. Grouped into their own unique, deep-water tribe (Benthochromini), these open-water giants inhabit the deep pelagic zones. They cruise along steep rocky walls and vertical drop-offs at depths frequently exceeding 50 to 150 metres.

Protractile Jaws & The Abyssal Ribbon Display

The name Benthochromis translates from Greek to imply a "deep-water or benthic cichlid," referencing their massive vertical tracking depth. They are highly specialized zooplanktonivores, feeding primarily on microscopic copepods, small crustaceans, and drifting insect larvae.

To catch food in low-light environments, they possess large, sensitive eyes and highly protractile jaws. When approaching a target plankton, their mouth shoots forward to form an elongated, circular tube, creating a powerful vacuum that pulls in prey with extreme precision.

They are globally known in the hobby as the ultimate "Giant Featherfins". Mature dominant males develop hyper-elongated, thread-like pelvic fins that can sweep gracefully well past the tail fin. They wave these ribbons like flags during stunning, high-vibrational mid-water courtship dances to attract passing schools of females.

Valid Species Directory

Modern taxonomic consensus recognizes three valid species within this prolific lineage, resolving historical name overlapping on your older archive:

  • Benthochromis horii Takahashi, 2008A highly celebrated species named in honour of researcher Michio Hori, featuring a more robust head mass and intense yellow-gold flank hues.
  • Benthochromis melanoides Poll, 1986A deeper, darker pelagic specialist characterized by an ultra-elongated snout line.
  • Benthochromis tricoti (Poll, 1948)The absolute historical type species of the genus. Famous for its highly elongated vertical silhouette, powder-blue heads, and brilliant neon-yellow stripes cutting horizontally across its silver body flank.

Aquarium Husbandry & Maternal Mouthbrooding

Adult males grow to an impressive length of 10 to 12 inches (25–30 cm), making them some of the largest schooling fish in the lake. Because they are active open-water endurance swimmers that can easily injure themselves if startled, they strictly demand enormous aquariums measuring at least 6 feet in length (150 to 180 gallons minimum). Provide a layout focusing on massive open horizontal swimming corridors, backed by a soft, fine sand substrate.

Unlike the substrate-spawning Altolamprologus, Benthochromis are highly advanced **maternal mouthbrooders** that spawn directly in mid-water. They are highly peaceful, docile, and social giants that completely lack territorial malice toward other species. They must never be housed alongside overly hyperactive or hyper-aggressive rock Mbuna, which will easily intimidate them, snap off their delicate trailing fins, and suppress their colours. In captivity, they eagerly accept premium commercial flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, krill, and copepods.
