Quick Facts

Genus Type: Polytypic (~4 valid species)
Family: Cichlidae
Subfamily: Pseudocrenilabrinae
Tribe: Tropheini (Algae-grazers)
Origin: Lake Tanganyika (Endemic)

Genus Overview: Pseudosimochromis

The genus Pseudosimochromis comprises a group of highly specialized, high-energy, and intensely territorial rock-dwelling cichlids endemic to Lake Tanganyika. Settled firmly within the prolific, algae-grazing Tropheini tribe, these robust, deep-bodied fish are highly prized by advanced enthusiasts for their intricate social colonies, unique skull profiles, and precision grazing mechanics.

The Curved Forehead & Filamentous Algae Shearing

The name Pseudosimochromis translates from Greek to imply a "false Simochromis," pointing to their heavy morphological similarities to their close evolutionary cousins. Their most defining physical trademark is an exceptionally steep, heavily rounded, and blunt cranial profile paired with a wide, downward-sloping lower jaw.

In their natural wild biotope, they colonize the sediment-free, sunlit upper rocky reefs and wave-swept boulder tiers. They are obligate herbivores that target the dense mats of Aufwuchs coating the stone faces.

To support this high-fiber diet, they have evolved heavily muscled mouth frames lined with rows of fine, closely spaced, three-pointed (tricuspid) teeth. The fish positions its blunt snout flat against a boulder, using its unique jaw angle to cleanly cut, clip, and shear away tough strands of filamentous green algae that other rock-dwellers lack the structural leverage to tear loose.

Valid Species Directory

Modern scientific records recognize roughly four valid species within this specialized grazing lineage, clearing away historical classification gaps:

  • Pseudosimochromis curvifrons (Poll, 1942)The absolute historical type species of the lineage, commonly called the Blunt-Head Algae Cichlid. Celebrated for its unique, high-backed profile and uniform metallic green-blue base iridescence.
  • Pseudosimochromis babaulti (Pellegrin, 1927)
  • Pseudosimochromis margaretae (Axelrod & Harrison, 1978)
  • Pseudosimochromis marginatus (Poll, 1956)The Bordered Algae Cichlid, displaying slightly stouter body dimensions and unique golden-yellow borders lining its high-crested dorsal fin.

Aquarium Husbandry & Maternal Mouthbrooding

Adult lengths typically reach a highly manageable 4.5 to 5.5 inches (11–14 cm). Because they are hyper-active, intensely territorial rock-dwellers that display extreme conspecific aggression (aggression toward their own kind), they demand careful captive layout strategy. They require spacious aquariums measuring at least 4 to 5 feet in length (75 to 125 gallons minimum) and should ideally be housed in large, overcrowded single-species colonies (10+ individuals) to properly distribute social dominance stress.

Provide an absolute abundance of heavy rockwork built into tall, complex matrices along the background to break sightlines and establish clear visual boundaries. They are highly advanced **maternal mouthbrooders** that carry eggs inside their oral cavities for up to 4 weeks.

Because they are obligate vegetarians built purely to handle dense roughage, their captive diet requires extreme attention. They must be fed a strictly herbivorous diet high in premium spirulina flakes and vegetable matter. High-protein or fatty mammal meats will break down their lengthy digestive structures, triggering fatal intestinal blocks known as "Tanganyikan Bloat."
