Originally classified as a specialized sub-genus within the massive Pseudotropheus catch-all group, modern molecular DNA sequencing and structural cranial alignments successfully elevated this lineage to full independent genus status. They are highly successful reef occupants that dominate sediment-free upper boulder tiers and shallow wave-washed rocky reefs lake-wide.

The Steep Snout & Shear-Angles Herbivory Mechanics

The name Tropheops translates to mean "having the appearance of Tropheus," pointing to the incredible evolutionary parallel adaptation they share with the algae-shearing Tropheus dynasties of Lake Tanganyika. Their most defining physical trademark is an exceptionally steep, near-vertical, and bluntly rounded skull profile. This cranial structure positions their mouthframe very low on the head, creating an entirely underslung jaw set.

They are highly specialized, obligate **epilithic herbivores**. They possess short, rigid jaws lined with tightly packed rows of specialized, broad bicuspid outer teeth. In their natural wild biotope, they target dense sheets of firmly anchored Aufwuchs (filamentous green algae carpets).

While traditional Zebras scrape rocks at a flat parallel angle, a Tropheops positions its body at a sharp, steep 45-to-90-degree tilt against a boulder face. Utilizing its down-turned jaws like a pair of mechanical clipping shears, it forcefully twists its head to bite, rip, and wrench off tough strands of filamentous algae cleanly from the rock substrate with unmatched mechanical leverage.

Aquarium Husbandry & Conspecific Aggression

Because they are hyper-active and display some of the absolute highest, most relentless levels of conspecific aggression (malice toward their own kind) in the entire lake, they require a strict captive setup strategy. They demand aquariums measuring at least 4 feet in length (55 to 75 gallons minimum for dwarf groups, while larger colonies require 90–125 gallons). They should ideally be housed in large, overcrowded mixed Mbuna communities or single-species colonies of 8 to 10+ individuals to break up visual lines of sight and safely dilute alpha dominance stress across the group.

Provide an abundant network of heavy rockwork built into tall, complex matrices along the background to break sight lines and establish clear territorial visual boundaries, backed by a fine sandy base. They are advanced **maternal mouthbrooders** that carry eggs inside their oral frames for up to 3 weeks.

They must be maintained in a strict harem setting (one male to multiple females) to safely distribute intense breeding pressure. Because their digestive tracks are exceptionally elongated to break down high-fiber wild vegetable roughage, their captive diet is critical and non-negotiable. They must be fed a strictly herbivorous diet high in premium spirulina flakes and vegetable matter. High-protein, mammal fats, or heavy bloodworms will instantly cause severe digestive blockages, triggering a rapid, fatal swelling epidemic known as "Malawi Bloat."
