Group: Haplochromines (Follower / Picker)

Genus Overview: Placidochromis

The genus Placidochromis comprises an exceptionally large, diverse, and visual spectacular group of non-Mbuna cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi. Highly revered within the aquarium trade for their peaceful temperaments, deep-set body shapes, and rich iridescent colour schemes, these highly intelligent fish primarily patrol the open sandy plains and transitional sediment boundaries.

The Following Foraging Strategy

The name Placidochromis translates from Latin to mean "peaceful cichlid," highlighting their remarkably docile social nature. They are specialized micro-predators and invertebrate pickers that feed on tiny crustaceans, midges, and insect larvae hiding along the lake bed.

In their natural wild biotope, they are famous for their "follower" behaviour. They will trail directly behind massive, sand-ploughing species—most notably Fossorochromis rostratus or large Taeniolethrinops—as they excavate the substrate. As the giant sand-sifters kick up thick underwater plumes of loose debris, the agile Placidochromis dart directly into the cloud to effortlessly pluck out the exposed invertebrates. Certain species, like P. milomo, have even evolved thick, fleshy lips to cushion their mouths while picking prey out of rugged rocky cracks.

Valid Species Directory

This species-rich genus contains more than 40 scientifically validated species, featuring some of the biggest icons of the cichlid world:

  • Placidochromis electra (Burgess, 1979)The classic Deep Water Hap, famous for its icy-blue body and striking black vertical bar cutting behind the operculum.
  • Placidochromis johnstoni (Boulenger, 1903)The absolute historical type species of the genus.
  • Placidochromis milomo Oliver, 1989The world-famous Super VC-10 Hap, celebrated for its massive body mass, bold vertical striping, and rubbery, hypertrophied lips.
  • Placidochromis phenochilus (Trewavas, 1935)The Star Sapphire Hap. Dominant males develop a gorgeous solid cobalt-blue body that slowly blankets in reflective, glittering white/silver speckles as they age.
  • Placidochromis jalo Hanssens, 2004The Jalo Reef variant, prized for its bright yellow dorsal fin contrasts.
  • Placidochromis boadzulu Hanssens, 2004
  • Placidochromis msakae Hanssens, 2004
  • Placidochromis longimanus Hanssens, 2004

Aquarium Husbandry

Adult lengths run from 6 inches in smaller variants up to a commanding 9 to 10 inches (22–25 cm) in large males of P. milomo. They require substantial aquariums measuring at least 5 to 6 feet in length (125 to 150 gallons). To fully support their wild foraging instincts, a soft, fine sand substrate is an absolute necessity; rough gravel can irritate their mouth tissues and damage their sensitive gill structures.

They are highly peaceful, social, and non-aggressive cichlids that do exceptionally well inside mixed Haplochromine and Peacock community displays. They must never be housed alongside overly hyperactive or hyper-aggressive rock-dwelling Mbuna, which will easily bully them, suppress their colours, and prevent them from feeding. In captivity, they eagerly accept high-quality commercial pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, and krill.
