The genus Copadichromis comprises an exceptionally beautiful and diverse group of open-water haplochromine cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi. Known locally and within the fishkeeping hobby as Utaka, these specialized schooling fish represent a major ecological link in the lake, forming massive wild shoals that dance in the water column just above deep rocky reefs or sandy plains.

Protractile Jaws & Open-Water Shoaling Mechanics

The name Copadichromis is a nod to their shoaling nature, but their defining evolutionary adaptation lies in their remarkable mouth geometry. They are obligate zooplanktonivores, feeding primarily on microscopic copepods, cladocerans, and insect larvae drifting in the lake currents.

To capture these tiny, fast-moving organisms, a Copadichromis relies on highly protractile jaws. When it approaches a target plankton, its mouth shoots forward at lightning speed to form an elongated, circular tube. This instantaneous expansion creates a powerful internal vacuum, pulling the target organism and a pocket of water directly into its mouth. In the wild, thousands of Utaka can be seen rising and falling together over underwater rock towers (called virundas), actively grazing the plankton-rich currents.

Aquarium Management

Because Copadichromis species are active, open-water endurance swimmers that average around 6 to 8 inches (15–20 cm) in length, they require deep and expansive aquariums—ideally tanks measuring at least 5 to 6 feet long. They should be provided with large, completely unobstructed horizontal swimming lanes.

They are highly peaceful, non-aggressive cichlids that do exceptionally well in mixed "Hap and Peacock" communities. However, they must never be housed alongside overly rowdy or hyper-aggressive Mbuna, which will easily stress them out and suppress their beautiful breeding colours. In captivity, they thrive on high-quality flake foods, micro-pellets, daphnia, and cyclops to replicate their natural zooplankton diet.
