Alticorpus

Quick Facts

Genus Type: Polytypic (6 species)
Family: Cichlidae
Subfamily: Pseudocrenilabrinae
Group: Non-Mbuna (Deep benthic)
Origin: Lake Malawi (Endemic)

Genus Overview: Alticorpus

The genus Alticorpus represents a group of highly specialized, deep-water predatory cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi. Unlike the shallow rock-dwelling Mbuna, these fish inhabit the deep benthic zones of the lake—frequently documented at depths ranging between 30 and over 150 metres.

Unique Biological Traits & Sensory Adaptations

The name Alticorpus means "high body". Because they live in cold, high-pressure, and low-light environments, they have evolved prominent lateral line systems. Their heads feature significantly enlarged sensory pores. These pits act like acoustic radars, picking up the minute vibrations of tiny invertebrates moving through the pitch-black diatomaceous ooze or sand beds at the bottom of the lake.

Additionally, some species within this lineage exhibit an elongated cleithrum bone which creates a prominent, visible bump or protrusion on their chest area.

Valid Species Directory

There are currently six formally recognized species catalogued within the Alticorpus lineage:

  • Alticorpus geoffreyi (Snoeks & Walapa, 2004)
  • Alticorpus macrocleithrum (Stauffer & McKaye, 1985) – Noted for its distinct chest prominence.
  • Alticorpus mentale (Stauffer & McKaye, 1988) – Recognizable by its prominent lower jaw extension.
  • Alticorpus pectinatum (Stauffer & McKaye, 1988)
  • Alticorpus peterdaviesi (Burgess & Axelrod, 1973)
  • Alticorpus profundicola (Stauffer & McKaye, 1988) – A deep-water specialist.

Aquarium Considerations

Due to their deep-water requirements, Alticorpus species are rarely seen in standard home aquariums. They require exceptionally large tanks with expansive open sand dimensions rather than tight rock stacks. Pristine, highly oxygenated water conditions are paramount, and lighting must be kept relatively dim to replicate their natural deep-water benthic zone.
