Genus Overview: Cynotilapia (Dogtooth Mbuna)

The genus Cynotilapia represents a highly successful and colourful group of dwarf rock-dwelling cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi. While they heavily resemble standard Metriaclima or Pseudotropheus species in body shape and zebra-striping, they possess a unique anatomical divergence that completely sets them apart from other algae-grazing Mbuna.

Dog-like Dentition & Planktonic Feeding

The name Cynotilapia is derived from the Greek word kynos (dog), referencing their highly specialized tooth configuration. Unlike traditional Mbuna that have flat, tightly spaced, two-pointed teeth for scraping dense algae carpets off rocks, Cynotilapia have evolved widely spaced, sharp, single-pointed unicuspid teeth that look like miniature dog fangs.

This predatory mouth shape allows them to exploit a unique ecological niche. Instead of constantly scraping the rocks, Cynotilapia spend their days hovering in large, active schools several meters out into the open water column directly above the rock reefs, feeding heavily on drifting zooplankton. However, when plankton currents run low, they will return to the rocks to opportunistically feed on loose sediment.

Aquarium Husbandry

Growing to a compact adult size of 3.5 to 4.5 inches (9–11 cm), Cynotilapia are perfect candidates for 55-gallon or larger Mbuna setups. Males are intensely territorial and will vigorously defend a choosing cave or rock pile against tank mates.

Because of their zooplankton-heavy wild diets, they are much less prone to dietary issues than other strict vegetarians in the Mbuna group. In captivity, they eagerly accept high-quality spirulina flakes, premium pellet foods, and occasional treats of frozen cyclops or daphnia. Provide plenty of stacked rocks, but ensure there is plenty of open, vertical swimming room above the reef structure to mimic their natural water-column schooling instincts.
