Variabilichromis

Tanganyikan Cichlids

Variabilichromis moorii is a species of cichlid endemic to lake Tanganyika, one of the rift lakes in eastern Africa. This species is only known from the southern portion of the lake. This species reaches a length of 10.3 centimetres (4.1 in) TL. It is also found in the aquarium trade. Currently it is the only known member of its genus.  It is a small ovate bodied fish named for an early collector of fish from the lake, J. Moore. Juveniles are lighter in coloration, usually bright yellow, depending on the location. V. moorii is primarily herbivorous, and may also feed on aquatic invertebrates.
